What is 7, and who is it for?
7 - funny guys talk sex addresses seven topics of interest to young men – the dating scene, breaking up, masturbation, first time sex, condoms, sexual health and being a good lover. For each topic, it includes comedy and honest discussion, straightforward advice, interesting facts, answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) and open-ended discussion questions. Its purpose is to stimulate conversations about relationships, sexuality and sexual health.
7 is designed to be a tool for youth workers, counsellors, health professionals and others who support teenage boys/young men, aged between 15 and 20. It could be used by other adults such as parents/carers, or teachers. It is not designed for classroom use, but we recognise that some teachers will adapt it for this purpose. It is primarily designed to address the needs of heterosexual young men aged 15-20, although some content may be relevant for young women, gay or bisexual young men and people who are younger or older.
7 includes some coarse language and sexual themes. It may not be suitable for everyone.
Why was it developed?
Young men need quality information about sexuality and relationships but they rarely feel comfortable initiating discussions about these topics. Similarly, many parents, teachers and youth workers see this need but lack the confidence to initiate these conversations.
Young men often have information about the biology of sex and reproduction but know little about the relational and emotional aspects.
Girls have access to quality information in magazines like Dolly, Girlfriend, Cleo and Cosmopolitan but there are no equivalents for boys. Most educational resources about these topics are perceived by young people (especially young men) as too biological, too dry and boring, irrelevant to their interests and needs.
Young men often rely on information from their peers, which is often unreliable. They may also turn to TV shows, movies and pornography for information about sexuality and relationships – not always healthy or reliable information sources!
Why did we use comedy?
By including comedy, we hope that 7 will be engaging and hold young men’s attention, which can otherwise be quite challenging.
Research shows that young men are big consumers of comedy and humour. There is evidence that using humour in health education is effective. It is engaging, aids retention, breaks down embarrassment and allows difficult subjects to be discussed openly.
Many young men look up to comedians. Their jokes, genuine stories from their lives and serious messages help to make this content credible for young men.
Some people may think that using comedy trivialises the subject and encourages young men to not take it seriously. Our experience is quite the opposite. Comedy makes it possible for young men to have a laugh, get the embarrassment and silliness out of the way and then have a frank and honest conversation. It’s good to acknowledge that relationships and sex are funny at times. It’s healthy to be able to have a laugh.
Can I use other resources with 7?
Definitely!
The best resource is an adult who is prepared to listen, question and discuss honestly, openly and without judgement.
